Before you try to learn the drum set, you should learn the rudiments. Rudiments are basic sticking patterns that enable you to play a variety of rhythms, and move around the set. Practice these sticking untill they become natural, starting at a slower speed. You will hear these rudiments in almost every song you listen to.
