Hope this helps, so u would use distortion pedal, at that, but it aint necessary.
if you knew your scales you would notice they are the same. just cus chris plays it like that doesnt mean that one is wrong, its all about which one people find easier to play. Personally i play the riff on the A string.

hard to play, but thats it. 100% sure
the "wrong" way its written is more conveniently than your supposed
"correct" way. and I learned the song more easily.
i don't care what you saw on TV, that one string thing seems so inherently wrong if you think about scales and being illogical and what not. everything else is played far above those frets.
just omit the "correct" version, because the only way it could possibly seem hard to play it on more than one string is muting the open note, so you could
just play the 5th fret on the E string
if you can't mute the note after you're done playing it.

many bands do that kind of technique, if you can't do that yet, you might want to practice at it, it'll improve your skills drastically.
u can play the first part of the verse on one string
but u can play the whole thing on one sting
